Advanced Meteorology is intended to provide the student with an in-depth understanding of the principles of forecasting weather and oceanographic conditions regarding navigation at the management level in accordance with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Code, Section A-II/2 and Table A-II/2, as amended and U.S. Coast Guard regulations in Title 46 CFR, Part 11. It covers all topics in the applicable module of the IMO Model Course 7.01, Master and Chief Mate. A mariner who successfully completes this course will satisfy the Advanced Meteorology training requirements of:46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(iii) and 11.307(a)(3)(iii) for STCW endorsements as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of 3,000 GT or more; AND 46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(iii) and 11.313(a)(3)(iii) for STCW endorsements as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of more than 500 GT and less than 3,000 GT; AND Satisfy evidence of meeting the standard of competence pertaining to meteorology as specified in Sections A-II/2 and A-II/3 and Tables A-II/2 and A-II/3 of the STCW Code as referenced in 46 CFR 11.305(a)(2), 46 CFR 11.307(a)(2), 46 CFR 11.311(a)(2), 46 CFR 11.313(a)(2), and 46 CFR 11.315(a)(2).

Prerequisite courses and other requirements

This course is intended for mariners seeking an STCW endorsement for Master or Chief Mate. As a seniorlevel course, students should have some basic knowledge of meteorology. It is recommended studentscomplete a basic meteorology course sometime prior to enrolling in this course. Each student must meetthe 46 CFR 10.221 ‘Citizen’ regulations and, as a minimum, be able to speak and understand the English language and be at least 16 years old. No physical examination is required. To receive the USCG credential portion they must meet the requirements as outlined on the National Maritime Center website.
