This course is intended to provide the student with an understanding of the responsibilities regarding safety duties associated with the care, use, or in-emergency response to the fuel on board ships subject to the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or Other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), and in so doing, meet the minimum standards of competence for seafarers on these vessels specified in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Code, Section A-V/3-1 and Table A-V/3-1, as amended and Change-2 to U.S. Coast Guard (CG-MMC) Policy Letter No. 01-21, dated December 13, 2022. This course covers all topics in the IMO Model Course 7.13, Basic Training for Masters, Officers, Ratings, and Other Personnel on Ships Subject to the IGF Code.
Approval should include the following competencies from Table A-V/3-1 of the STCW Code:
Contribute to the safe operation of a ship subject to the IGF Code
Take precautions to prevent hazards on a ship subject to the IGF Code
Apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures
Respond to emergencies
Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment from the release of fuels found on ships subject to the IGF Code
Note: The knowledge, understanding, and proficiency (KUP) for the “Carry out fire-fighting operations on a ship subject to the IGF Code” competency is satisfied by previously completing approved training for basic firefighting AND possessing a currently valid endorsement for STCW Basic Training (BT).
Seafarers responsible for designated safety duties associated with the care, use, or in-emergency response to the fuel on board ships subject to the IGF Code should hold a certificate in basic training (BT) for service on ships subject to the IGF Code in accordance with STCW Convention regulation V/3, paragraph 4.
This course is essentially a course with practical guidance and information, and provides training and qualifications for masters, officers, ratings, and other personnel on ships subject to the IGF Code.
