Basic Meteorology is intended to provide the student with an in-depth understanding of the principles of planning and conducting a passage with due regard to aspects of meteorology in accordance with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Code, Sections A-II/1 and A-II/3 and Tables A-II/1 and A-II/3, as amended and U.S. Coast Guard regulations in Title 46 CFR, Part. It covers all topics in the applicable module of the IMO Model Course 7.03, Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch.

Prerequisite courses and other requirements

This course is open to students that must, as a minimum, be able to speak and understand the English 
language and be at least 16 years old. No physical examination is required. To receive the USCG credential 
portion they must meet the requirements as outlined on the National Maritime Center website

 

Maritime Institute Meteorology (Operational Level) (MARINS 316) course will satisfy the meteorology training requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(xiii) for as STCW endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) for vessels of 500 GT (ITC) or more and the meteorology standards  of competence required by  46 CFR 11.309(a)(3); STCW Code Section A-II/1 and Table A-II/1 as amended 2010 meeting National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 12-14(Ch-5) Task 1.9, 1.10 and 1.11; and the meteorology standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.317(a)(2) and 11.321(a)(2); STCW Code Section A-II/3 and Table A-II/3 as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 13-14(Ch-4) Tasks 1.11.A, 1.12.A, and 1.13.A.  Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
