Mariners successfully completing Maritime Institute's ECDIS course will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS Navigation and electronic charts principles and operations as defined in the STCW code, as amended. This will include the understanding of the competencies in Table A-II of the STCW Code, but is not limited to: Capabilities and limitations of ECDIS operations; How to interpret and analyze information obtained from ECDIS Management of operational procedures, system files and data; How to install, correct and use electronic charts; How to determine the validity of sensor data (including radar overlays); Potential errors in interpretation and presentation; Proper operational and alarm settings for Route Monitoring; How to access the ship's log and data playback functions; How to plan and execute a Voyage Passage utilizing ECDIS; How to determine ship's position using ECDIS with specific knowledge of its operational principles, limitations, sources of errors, detection of misrepresentations of information and methods of correction to obtain an accurate fix in accordance with A-II/2 of STCW Code.
This course is principally intended for candidates for certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch. The student should have a working knowledge of electronic navigation, bridge procedures and voyage planning
