Able Seaman
Successfully completing Maritime Institute's USCG-Approved Able Seaman course satisfies the examination and Marlinspike Seamanship demonstration requirements of 46 CFR 12.405 for any National Able Seaman endorsement. The course certificate received upon successfully completing this course must be submitted to the USCG National Maritime Center within one (1) year of the date on the certificate. This course does not satisfy any sea service requirements. This course does not satisfy additional training requirements for an Able Seaman rating such as Lifeboatman/Proficiency in Survival Craft. Able Seaman is a deck rating that requires qualifying experience, passing examinations/assessments, and approved training. To apply for a National Able Seaman rating, there are U.S. Coast Guard requirements in addition to completing a USCG-Approved course. Please refer to the USCG National Maritime Center (NMC) checklist of requirements for a national Able Seaman: https://www.dco.uscg.mil/nmc/checklist/ The Able Seaman rating you are issued by the NMC will be dependent on your qualifying sea service experience. Proficiency in Survival Craft/Lifeboatman certification is also required by the US Coast Guard prior to being issued the credential.
