The Home Care Aide to Nursing Assistant Bridge Program is a 24-hour intensive course designed to bridge the gap between students' current expertise as a Home Care Aide and the competencies required of a Nursing Assistant. This program aims to expand upon student's existing knowledge and skills, providing a solid foundation to excel in the nursing assistant role. The program structure is divided into theoretical and practical experiences, encompassing a total of 24 hours, which is broken down into 16 hours of theory and lab work and an 8-hour externship. The curriculum covers a comprehensive range of topics that are essential in the development of a skilled nursing assistant. In the Personal Care Skills module, which allocates 8 hours of theory and lab time, students will engage in advanced techniques and practices to deliver exceptional personal care to residents, focusing on promoting dignity and maintaining independence. AIDS Education, assigned 1 hour of the program, will update students with the latest information and procedures for the care and understanding of residents living with AIDS, ensuring students' knowledge is current and comprehensive. Students will spend 1-hour exploring Resident Rights and Independence, emphasizing the importance of respecting and advocating for the residents' rights, and promoting their independence as much as possible. The Communication and Interpersonal Skills session, though brief at 0.5 hours, is vital. This segment will hone students' abilities to interact effectively with residents, family members, and the healthcare team, essential for coordinated care and therapeutic relationships. Infection control is critical in healthcare settings; therefore, 1 hour will be dedicated to Infection Control practices to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and staff. The Safety and Emergency Procedures segment, also spanning 1 hour, will prepare students to respond to emergencies quickly and precisely, ensuring resident and personal safety at all times. Students will engage in a sensitive yet crucial topic for 0.5 hours in Death: Resident and Family, where the focus will be on providing compassionate care and support during the end-of-life stages. Ethical & Legal Considerations are paramount in the healthcare field. For 1 hour, students will delve into the legal responsibilities and ethical boundaries of the nursing assistant's role. Understanding and caring for residents with cognitive impairments can be challenging, and therefore, 2 hours are devoted to the Care of the Cognitively Impaired. This will enhance students' abilities to provide specialized care tailored to the needs of these individuals. Lastly, the Clinical Practice externship will be a practical application of the learned concepts in a real-world setting for a total of 8 hours. This hands-on experience is essential in integrating theory with practice. Upon completing this bridge program, students will have sharpened their competencies in the above areas, making students well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the nursing assistant role with confidence and professionalism.
