MEDICATION ASSISTANT ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM

Health Professionals Institute
The Medication Assistant Endorsement Program is designed to equip students with comprehensive skills and knowledge necessary for the safe and effective administration of medications in a variety of healthcare settings. Throughout the four-week program, students will engage in a series of structured educational components, combining both theoretical knowledge and practical application, culminating in a real-world externship experience. The program structure is as follows: Medication Fundamentals (16 hours): Students will be introduced to the basic principles of pharmacology, including medication classifications and mechanisms of action. The goal is to create a solid foundation upon which students can build practical skills. Medication Administration (18 hours): This segment focuses on the procedures and techniques for administering medications correctly and includes understanding dosages, delivery methods, and documentation requirements. Medication Safety (6 hours): Students will learn about the importance of medication safety practices to prevent errors and ensure patient safety. This includes instruction on how to identify and report errors or adverse reactions. Legal and Ethical Considerations (4 hours): This essential part of the curriculum covers the legal responsibilities and ethical considerations in medication administration, including patient rights and confidentiality. Communication (6 hours): Effective communication skills are vital in healthcare. This module emphasizes the role of clear and accurate communication in the context of medication management. Skills Practice/Lab (10 hours): Students will engage in hands-on practice in a controlled lab setting to reinforce their learning and build confidence in their practical skills. Clinical Externship (40 hours): The program concludes with a clinical externship, where students apply their acquired knowledge in a real-world healthcare environment under the supervision of a licensed professional. Upon completion of the total 100 hours - 60 hours of classroom and lab work, plus 40 hours of clinical externship - students will be prepared to function as competent Medication Assistants, with the ability to contribute to the healthcare team in a meaningful and impactful way. The program not only focuses on the procedural aspects of medication administration but also instills a commitment to patient-centered care and professional responsibility.
