This entry-level course is not USCG required since there is no license required to work as an Engineering Wiper onboard a vessel. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of shipboard operations, safety procedures, and the essential skills needed to succeed as a wiper. Topics include safety protocols, shipboard emergency procedures, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), introduction to commonly used hand/power tools, maritime and marine engineering terminology, equipment found onboard, how the equipment builds shipboard machinery and how the machinery works together in shipboard systems and operations. There is also a chapter introducing students to what it is like to live and work onboard a vessel, what types of licenses are required in various positions within the engineering department and how to advance your maritime career.
