Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA)

This course is required by all deck officers of vessels equipped with ARPA for collision avoidance and navigation. The course covers the theory, operation, limitations and practical applications of navigation, collision avoidance of radar and ARPA systems. Also covered are the methods by which ARPA acquires and tracks radar contacts and demonstrates the limitations of the radar equipment including the dangers of over-reliance on information derived from ARPA. Mariners successfully completing our Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA) course will satisfy the ARPA training requirements of the following: 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(vi), 11.307(a)(3) (vi), 11.309(a)(4)(xiv), 11.311(a)(3)(viii), 11.313(a)(3)(viii), 11.315(a)(3)(v), 11.317(a)(3)(vii), 11.319(a)(4)(viii), 11.321(a)(3)(vii); AND The ARPA standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.309(a)(3) and 11.319(a)(3); STCW Code Section A-II/1 and Table A-II/1, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVICs 12-14(Ch-4) and 02-18 Tasks 3.5.A and 3.6; AND The ARPA standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.305(a)(2), 11.307(a)(2), 11.311(a)(2), 11.313(a)(2), and 11.315(a)(2); STCW Code Section A-II/2 and Table A-II/2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVICs 10-14(Ch-3), 11-14(Ch-3), and 03-18 Task 5.1; AND The ARPA standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.317(a)(2) and 11.321(a)(2); STCW Code Section A-II/3 and Table A-II/3, as amended 2010.

There is no minimum entry standard prescribed for this course. Although the course is designed with the professional mariner in mind, it remains open to anyone simply wishing to expand theirmaritime knowledge. Candidates desiring the license must submit their completed application package to the appropriate U.S. Coast Guard Regional Examination Center for evaluation asprescribed by applicable regulations and policies. The U.S. Coast Guard does not require approval of candidates prior to participationin this course. However, a Photo ID is required IAW
