This course is for students who currently have a valid Washington Class B Driver’s License and intend to drive a commercial vehicle with at least one trailer (in combination) safely and effectively, preparing them for and allowing them to take the commercial driver’s license Combination Test, Vehicle Pre-inspection test, Basic Controls Skills Test and the On-road Drive Test. These four tests are the pre-requisites for the state to upgrade a Class B to a Class A Commercial Driver’s License meeting all Federal Department of Transportation and Washington Department of Licensing standards. This course also allows students the opportunity (optional) to prepare for the state tests that allow them to gain their:
Passenger Endorsement
Doubles & Triples Endorsement
Tanker Endorsement
Upon gaining their Class A Commercial Driver’s License, students will be able to obtain employment driving commercial vehicles that are rated Class A or Class B. If they are 20 years or younger they will be restricted to driving within the state of Washington.
This course is all resident learning. The curriculum for General Knowledge, Air Brakes and Combination module, the Entry Level Driver’s Training module as well as the Passenger, Doubles & Triples, Tanker, Hazardous Materials and School Bus Endorsements are all provided in a classroom format with certified instructors on iPads and in written materials that will be taught at the Driving Academy campus. But it is also available for additional instruction and practice remotely. The Yard and Road Training & Driving Module must be done on campus as it is hands-on training with certified instructors.
This course is lesson based, has 76 lessons. The classroom portion takes approximately 14 clock hours and must be completed within the assigned cohort schedule. The Yard and Road Training and Driving Module can start and go at the pace desired by each individual student so long as it is scheduled 24 hours in advance and within a complete 4-hour training block. The student’s expectation should be to spend a total of approximately 80 clock hours learning, testing, and training. Full-time students can complete this course in 2 weeks. It is expected that no student takes longer than 40 weeks to complete this course and to gain certification.
