Inclusive education is a dynamic and ever evolving approach to teaching that is transforming today’s schools. We believe that inclusive education involves the valuing and facilitating of full participation and belonging of all students. Our unique combined program in special and elementary education provides you with the experience to become an instrument of change in your teaching career. This two-year, compacted program offers a facilitated sequence of courses combined with significant practical experience, including a year-long internship/residency with highly skilled mentor teachers. The curriculum has been co-designed by experts in the field and master teachers. Graduates from our program are highly sought-after teachers in both general and special education classrooms and are frequently at the top of the candidate pool for teaching jobs.

Enrollment restrictions apply in all teacher education programs. Meeting the criteria below makes the applicant eligible for admission, but does not guarantee admission. Candidates who meet all criteria are further evaluated by the department to determine the most qualified applicants. Complete WWU GURs, a Direct Transfer AA, or a Bachelor’s Degree. Minimum grade point average of 2.75 (overall or last 45 credits). English composition course with a grade of B- or higher. Official transcripts for all community colleges or universities previously attended. Reflective essays (prompts are noted in the online application). Three academic or professional references (prompts to identify/contact references are noted in the online application). Satisfaction of Basic Skills Requirement. Applicants to teacher education programs in the State of Washington are required to take a basic skills assessment for admission, but candidates will no longer need to achieve a specific passing score. This may be met by: a) Taking the West-B exam, b) SAT scores, c) ACT scores. See our WEST-B website for details and test registration information. Satisfaction of math pre-requisite. Students are required to take Math 381, Math 382, and Math 383 to satisfy requirements for teacher certification. Math 381 is offered during the first quarter of enrollment and the pre-req must be met prior to beginning the program. The pre-req can be met in one of the following ways: Obtain a grade of C or better in an Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, or Pre-Calculus course at a regionally accredited college or university within the last five years. (Note: Completion of MATH& 107 from a WA State CC does NOT satisfy Western's math pre-req.) Obtain a grade of C or better in Western's MATH 111 or 112 within the last five years. Obtain a passing score on Western's ALEKS Math Placement Assessment (MPA). Placement test is available upon offer of admission.
