80 total hours. 40 hours of classroom instruction, 14 hours of street driving training, 8 hours of training in backing maneuvers, 8 hours of proficiency development and 10 hours of combined lab training, range training and observation. Classroom instruction consists of orientation where the students is introduced to our school and is told about scheduling, grading, and what is expected of the student. Preparation for the written exam, this section gets the student ready to pass the written exam, which includes general knowledge, air brakes, and endorsements. The student will also learn about the rules and regulations of truck driving and what it takes to be a professional driver, how to use logbooks and how to record time and compute on and off duty time and map reading. Field instruction consists of coupling and uncoupling and the hazards involved with it, vehicle systems with a strong emphasis on brakes and electrical systems, vehicle maintenance, vehicle inspection where the student is taught the CDL pre-trip inspection per regulations, street driving training, shifting, backing maneuvers training, visual search, space management and speed management. Tacoma Truck School is open to any High School graduate, or GED (equivalent) eighteen years or older.
To be accepted for training, applicants must:
1.    Be at least 18 years of age – State and Federal minimum within Washington for Commercial Driving.

2.    Tacoma Truck school accepts students from other countries. Tacoma Truck School requires an English-speaking proficiency. The applicant must pass an entrance knowledge exam with a 70% to be considered for the program.

3.    The student must have the ability to read and write English at the level of a graduate of an American High School as demonstrated by the possession of a high school diploma or GED. No English language services or translators will be provided. 

4.    Present High School Diploma or GED Certificate or pass a graded entrance exam.

5.    Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical and NIDA Drug Testing.

6.    Obtain a current Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) print out – print out must be obtained within the last 30 days.

7.    Students from other countries must have a valid driver’s license from any state of America, and a valid passport.
A school staff member will interview the applicant explaining such pertinent information as training programs, graduation requirements, job placement, costs, and other general information. Applicants will be provided with a school catalog and information on the school placement program. All applicants are required to complete an enrollment application.
