Total Duration: 160 hours. Classroom Instruction: 40 hours. Street Driving Training: 18 hours. Backing Maneuvers Training: 16 hours. Proficiency Development: 16 hours. Lab Training, Range Training, and Observation: 70 hours, Eligibility for Enrollment. Residency in the state. Completion of an approved training course or certification by an employer for necessary skills. Possession of a commercial learner's permit if without a valid Class A CDL. Passing a knowledge and skills examination as per 49 C.F.R. Part 383, subparts F, G, and H. Curriculum Breakdown: Week 1 (Theory Instruction Standard Curriculum). Topics: Orientation, Control Systems/Dashboard, Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections, Basic Control, Shifting/Operating Transmissions, Backing and Docking, Coupling and Uncoupling, Safe Operating Procedures, Visual Search, Communication, Distracted Driving, Speed Management, Space Management, Night Operation, Extreme Driving Conditions, Advanced Operating Practices, Hazard Perception, Skid Control/Recovery, Jackknifing, and Other Emergencies, Vehicle Systems and Reporting Malfunctions, Identification and Diagnosis of Malfunctions, Roadside Inspections, Maintenance, Non-Driving Activities, Handling and Documenting Cargo, Environmental Compliance Issues, Hours of Service Requirements, Fatigue and Wellness Awareness, Post-Crash Procedures, External Communications, Whistleblower/Coercion, Trip Planning, Drugs/Alcohol, and Medical Requirements. Additional Program Features: Day 1 Orientation: Includes a comprehensive course overview, safety & dress code briefing, drug & alcohol policy, video on Truckers Against Trafficking, and permit requirements discussion. Assessment: Students must achieve a minimum score of 80% on theory assessments. Training Ratio: Classroom setting with a 10 to 1 student-to-instructor ratio, practical training with a 3 to 1 ratio. Certification and Compliance: Upon successful completion of the program, students will be equipped to meet the state and federal standards for operating Class A commercial motor vehicles, qualifying them for their Class A CDL.
