Sustainable development can be understood as development that meets the needs of humanity today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs including enjoying environmental and socio-cultural resources. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has identified tourism, which is the world's largest industry and one that is disproportionately important to developing countries and less economically secure peoples, as the most integral component of sustainable development. The UNWTO defines sustainable tourism as tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities. Leveraging the importance of tourism to global sustainability, there have been three identified pillars of sustainability: People, Planet, and Profit. This certificate will ensure learners are well-versed in all three areas of sustainability and able to identify the role of tourism in global security and development.
