An IT business analyst is tasked with collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to help IT-related departments or IT business units make operational decisions. Data sources may include customer or user analytics, internal resource allocation metrics, staff performance metrics, or system logs. Related occupational roles include cybersecurity analysts, which confine their research and analysis to technical network and data access control functions, and require more in-depth technical knowledge. This is not a general business analyst position and focuses on systems analysis and not the full IIBA BOK.

Minimum qualifications must be clearly stated and applied in a nondiscriminatory manner [WAC 296-05-015(17)]. At least 18 years of age. Must be able to perform the work of the occupations that is herein defined, with or without reasonable accommodation. Candidates who are not United States citizens must demonstrate work eligibility through the duration of the term of apprenticeship.
