A course of instruction for students seeking to upgrade from a Class B or Class C Commercial Driver License to a Class A must follow the Class A behind-the-wheel training curriculum as defined in Appendix A to Part 380 of the Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.), as it existed on the effective date of the applicable Washington Administrative Code (WAC). Upgrade from either class B or C to class A - Minimum requirements: A course of instruction for students seeking to upgrade from a class B or C to a class A must follow the class A behind the wheel training curriculum defined in C.F.R. Appendix A to Part 380 as it existed on the (effective date of the WAC). The course must include not less than: Week 1: 20 Hours Classroom, 20 Hours Lab/Range/Observation: Pre-Trip inspection, familiarization of the equipment, shifting, coupling, speed management. Truckers against trafficking. Week 2: 10 Hours Street Driving: Flat land driving, starting on grade, extreme right turns, use of mirrors. 20 Hours Lab/Range/Observation: Pre-trip inspection, shifting, log books, parking, axle weights, bridge weights. 10 Hours Backing Combination Vehicle: Straight line backing, alley dock backing, off set backing. Week 3: 8 Hours Driving: Flat land and grade driving. 10 Hour Lab/Range/Observation: Pre-trip inspection, left turns, intersections, mirrors, chaining up tractor and drag chain. 6 Hours Backing Combination Vehicle: Straight backing, alley dock backing, off set backing, blindside backing, and docking. 16 Hours Proficiency: Road driving, highway, intersections, and railroad crossings. Mirrors, braking, shifting (up and down. Washington State requires a minimum of total of 120 hours of instruction and practical driving to upgrade from class B or C CDL to Class A CDL. The instruction is broken down as follows: Range/Road: 120 hours.

Prerequisite courses and other requirements

To be eligible for enrollment in the CDL training program, candidates must complete an enrollment application, have a high school diploma or GED or pass an admissions examination designed to evaluate their ability to complete CDL training, be at least 18 years of age, and be able to read and speak the English language. They must possess a valid driver’s license for their state of residence and a valid Social Security card. Candidates must also demonstrate the physical ability to perform tasks required for employment as a commercial and/or school bus driver, pass a DOT physical examination, and pass a drug screening for commercial drivers.
