STCW Basic Training is composed of four separate courses (Basic Fire Fighting, Medical Emergencies at Sea, Personal Survival Techniques, and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities. Each course may be taken as a stand-alone course, or a student may sign up for all four courses at once.
Course lengths are:
Basic Fire Fighting: 16-hours
Medical Emergencies at Sea: 8-hours
Personal Survival Techniques: 12-hours
Personal Survival and Social Responsibilities: 4-hours
All courses are STCW and USCG approved and are either entirely taught in a classroom or are split between the classroom and the approved site required to complete practical assessments. In Personal Survival Techniques, students complete in-water assessments in a pool and Basic Fire Fighting students complete practical assessments in a live fire simulator. The practical assessment portions of these courses are hands-on.
At the completion of each course, the student will receive a USCG approved certificate of completion.

Prerequisite courses and other requirements
Students should be in good health and able-bodied to pass the skill-based assessments in First Aid, Basic Fire Fighting, and Personal Survival Techniques. English language comprehension will be required to pass all exams. And all students will be required to tread water, float, or swim for a period of one minute.
