PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe Certificate in Medical Assistant program provides the technical skills and work habits required to seek entry-levelpositions as Medical Assistants. The computer technology and word processing facets of the curriculum enhance students’ potential foremployment. Students are prepared for a National Certification Exam (e.g., NCCT, NHA, CMA, etc.) and complete a 160-hour externship program at a local clinic, physician’s office, hospital, HMO (Health Maintenance Organization), or other allied healthambulatory facility. In addition to attendance in all courses, students will be required to complete out-of-class assignments. Theseassignments include but are not limited to reading, exercises and problem solving, projects, research, papers, and presentations. Astudent can anticipate out-of-class activities that equal about two (2) hours for every one (1) hour of lecture. Upon successful completionof the program (see Graduation Requirements section of the catalog), students could seek or obtain entry-level employment in amedical assistant related field.

Prerequisite courses and other requirements

All students must attest to having one (1) of the following: A high school diploma; A recognized equivalency certificate (e.g., GED); or Having passed a State-authorized examination recognized as the equivalent of a high school diploma (e.g., High School Equivalent Test (HiSET) or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC), or other State authorized examination). If a student does not meet one those requirements, then they must: Provide documentation of an official passing score for an approved ability to benefit test prior to the first scheduled course; or, Be simultaneously enrolled in C4L Academy’s adult high school program and a certificate-level Career Pathway Program (CPP) offered by Charter College.
