HCA-CNA BRIDGE PROGRAM

The HCA to CNA program allows licensed HCA to test for CNA after an additional 36 Hours of training. It will equip and prepare individuals to provide basic patient care under the supervision of registered nurses, focusing on skills like personal care, vital signs, and patient safety in various healthcare settings. To participate, an individual must have an active HCA license with the WA State Dept of Health. The program will provide classroom, lab, and Clinical training to all students and will be as described below.

Core Skills and Knowledge that will focus on:

  1. Patient Care: learn to assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and toileting.
  2. Vital Signs: learn to accurately measure and record vital signs like temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  3. Patient Safety: ensure a safe environment for patients, including proper handling and transferring techniques, and infection control practices.
  4. Communication: Effective skills that are crucial for staff, patients, families, and other healthcare professionals’ communication.
  5. Basic Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding basic human anatomy and physiology helps CNAs understand the needs of their patients.
  6. Nutrition and Feeding: basic nutrition and how to assist patients with feeding.

Program Structure:

  1. Classroom Instruction: Classroom lectures and discussions will cover theoretical knowledge.
  2. Skills Lab: Provide Hands-on practice in a skills lab to allow students to practice basic nursing skills under the supervision of instructors.
  3. Clinical Rotations: Supervised clinical experience in real nursing homes to provide practical experience.

Certification and Exam:

Program Completion: After completing the bridging program, students will be eligible to take a competency exam and register for certification with the State after passing the exam. The State exam is based on two parts; online written test and in person skills test provided by Nursing Assistant Certification (NAC) Exam offered by Credentia.

To enroll in the HCA-CNA Bridging Program, an applicant must hold an active Home Care Aide (HCA) credential issued by the Washington State Department of Health. Applicants must also possess a High School Diploma or its equivalent (GED). Applicants must be in good standing and meet the school’s admissions requirements.

The program prepares licensed Home Care Aides for the Nurse Assistant Certified (NAC) examination through additional classroom theory, skills laboratory practice, and supervised clinical experience.
