Foundations of Woodworking I offers foundational woodworking knowledge and practice to students interested in pursuing these lifelong skills professionally or for personal enrichment. Students learn how to effectively shape and build with wood, considering its biological and mechanical properties. They will learn the safe and effective use of hand tools and gradually be introduced to machine tools. Students will learn project management and produce a variety of joinery and simple furniture assemblies including gluing and finishing techniques. Students will also be introduced to furniture history and design. Students will be taught Design; Shop practice, personal practice, and project management; Hand tool proficiency; Machine tool proficiency; Joinery; Glue-up and assembly; Finishing and surface preparation; Stock selection, preparation, and handling; Shapes, curves, and details; Sharpening and tool maintenance.
