Salmon and Trout Culturing Techniques

Bellingham Technical College
Do you want to learn more about fish hatchery operations, conservation programs, and sustainable food production? Have you recently graduated from college but don’t meet the hands-on experience requirements for the jobs you want? Do you have a passion for working with your hands and being outdoors? If any of these statements apply to you, then the Salmon and Trout Culturing Techniques Certificate can help you accomplish your goal. Intended for students with prior college education in a related field and/or relevant work experience, this advanced-level certificate skips the basics and dives straight into the technical expertise to design, operate, and sustain a fish culturing program. Course topics include embryo, juvenile, and broodstock care, reproduction and fertilizing techniques, fish nutrition and health, and stock enhancement techniques. Students may also customize their certificate plan with several elective courses ranging from animal genetics to aquatic chemistry to data analysis and more. Courses are centered around the award-winning and student-operated Whatcom Creek Hatchery, which is the only college hatchery in Washington that releases millions of salmonids each year to support local fisheries. Students also conduct off-site training in fish culturing with state, industry, and tribal partners to gain experience with different species in a variety of systems. Washington state operates the largest hatchery system in the world. Fish culturists are in high demand here and across the region to help rebuild salmon and trout stocks and provide sustainable seafood for our communities. Are you ready to join? Meet now with an academic advisor to build your customized certificate plan and get started. Included in the AAS- Fish Specialization degree
