SIEAM was established in 1994 and has a longstanding history of providing education in East Asian medicine. Throughout our history, we have maintained continuous accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (ACAHM), and SIEAM is approved by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC). Graduates from our programs are eligible to take the national board exams in East Asian medicine and pursue licensure in Washington State. Since our inception, we have graduated over 300 students, approximately 90% of whom remain active in clinical practice. Chinese medical massage, known as tui na, has always been a component of our training. Tui na is recognized as an essential aspect of East Asian medicine and is within the scope of practice for licensed practitioners in Washington. In 2002, we enhanced tui na instruction, and shortly thereafter, we launched our own massage clinic on our main campus. After years of successfully offering tui na and operating our student massage clinic, we began considering a dedicated massage training program as part of our school. In 2020, ACAHM approached us to assist in developing standards for an accredited massage certificate program tailored to schools of East Asian medicine. Following national consultation and extensive development, ACAHM issued standards for a Graduate Certificate in Asian Medical Bodywork in 2022. SIEAM has now received approval from ACAHM to enroll students in its Certificate in Asian Medical Bodywork. This is a 690-hour, full-time, three-trimester program that can be completed within one calendar year. The curriculum prepares graduates to practice tui na, shiatsu, and related modalities as licensed massage therapists for diverse client needs and populations.
